Joseph T.'s Story

After graduation, I worked for Sears until I enlisted in the Navy in April 1961. Trained in Chinese language, sent to Taiwan to work with the National Security Agency, Married there, lost my Top Secret clearance. Sent to USS Ticonderoga where I witnessed a part of the Gulf of Tonkin "incidents" and the aftermath. Got out of the Navy in 1968, joined the anti-war movement while stu...Expand for more
dying at Circle Campus. Worked fulltime at the Chicago Daily News before starting graduate school in Champaign-Urbana, moving there with my wife and our two kids. Got an MA in Asian Studies and a PhD in Political Science. Taught in Australia, Iowa and Illinois. Recently retired from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Divorced with two children and two grandchildren.
